The eastern region of Sri Lanka has a disproportionate number of female heads
of households. This is due to the premature death of their spouses during the
civil war, and sometimes to deaths due to cardiac conditions, suicide, and
alcoholism. The women have shouldered the responsibility of caring for the
children while working to provide for the family.
Empower Serendib aims to provide microfinance and technical assistance to these mothers engaged in home gardening, poultry, dairy, shopkeeping, and inland fishing.

Visit to Katakaraichenai, a rural village in the Trincomalee district. The village is engaged in sustainable farming, promoting resilience, self-sufficiency, and environmental protection. Women in the community are leading this initiative.
