A New Home and a New Beginning for Family in Sangaman Kanda Village, Ampara District

Updated: Dec 7, 2025

In a quiet corner of the Thirukkovil Division, nestled in Sangaman Kanda village, a transformation has taken place that goes beyond bricks and mortar. What was once a fragile clay hut is now a safe and dignified home for V. Thilakarani and her small family, made possible through Vanni Hope’s Shelter for Life initiative and the generous sponsorship of Steve (Sathia) and Gowri Kumar from the USA.

Meeting Urgent Needs with Compassion

Thilakarani’s family of three had long struggled with inadequate shelter, no access to clean

drinking water, and a lack of proper sanitation. Her husband, a day labourer, was doing

everything he could to support the family, but their home was falling apart, exposing them to the harsh climate and worsening health risks. Without a toilet or water connection, even basic hygiene was a challenge.

Seeing their hardship, our team prioritised this project for urgent implementation. Through our Shelter for Life – Community Development initiative, we were able to respond not only to the immediate housing need but also provide essential facilities that restore a sense of security and dignity.

A Durable, Dignified Home

The new home features two permanent rooms, a shaded veranda, a proper toilet, and a direct connection to drinking water. Constructed using concrete-rendered flooring, block brick walls, and asbestos-sheet roofing, the house is built to last. It offers the family a secure, weather-resistant structure where they can finally settle, rest, and focus on building a better future.

For Thilakarani’s young son, this new environment is more than just a place to sleep, it’s a safe space to learn, grow, and dream. Stable housing is one of the most powerful interventions in breaking the cycle of poverty, and this project proves it.

Why We Go Further

At Vanni Hope, we believe that safe shelter is a fundamental human right, not a luxury. However, we also believe that support must go further, addressing not just shelter, but also access to water, sanitation, and a future of opportunity. Projects like these reflect our commitment to holistic, sustainable development, where no family is left behind.

We are deeply grateful to our sponsors, Steve (Sathia) and Gowri Kumar, whose generosity and belief in this mission made this project possible.
